DENVER, N.C. — “Moped mayhem” – A North Carolina man is facing more than a dozen charges after leading sheriff deputies on a chase through two counties on a moped.

Lincoln County Sheriff deputies say they attempted to stop 31-year-old Dion Albert Torrence just before 11 p.m. in the 700 block of South N.C. 16, Saturday night.

Torrence refused to stop, leading deputies on a chase through two counties with speeds exceeding 20 mph over the posted limit at times.

The North Carolina moped manic drove his moped into Gaston County before crashing it near a church.

According to the police report, Torrence  fled on foot  but was quickly taken into custody by deputies following a short foot pursuit.

Deputies say they recovered a cigarette pack that Torrence allegedly discarded while running. The box had what appeared to be cocaine inside, the press release states.

Torrence was charged with two counts of felony possession of cocaine, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, resist, delay and obstruct a public officer, careless and reckless driving, felony speeding to elude arrest, two safe movement violations, two counts of speeding, fail to operate headlamps, operating a vehicle without registration, no financial responsibility, driving while license revoked and five outstanding warrants.

Torrence was placed in jail under a $25,390 secured bond.

In the end, if there is a message we can take from this story, I think it’s this, if you’re dumb enough to carry cocaine on your person than it’s probably not a great idea to do it while calling attention to yourself on a moped. Next time, try something a little more subtle, like a unicycle.
