NEW YORK, N.Y.—The Comedy Cellar in Manhattan erupted in thunderous applause when comedian Artie Lange took the stage during a surprise appearance late Saturday night.
Lange, 42, best known for his work on Howard Stern’s radio show has been out of the spotlight while he sought treatment following a suicide attempt last January.
The comedian’s long battle with addiction came to a head earlier this year when Lange stabbed himself in the abdomen with a kitchen knife.
During the crowd’s tremendous applause, Lange reportedly said, “Oh you guys are going to bring a tear to my eye.”
Lange’s appearance Saturday night reinforced the crowd’s undaunting love for the former MADtv cast member. “Fans relate to Lange’s comedy because he is the every-man, the one you can’t help but root for,” a fan said.
Comedian Craig Gass told the Post, “”He had a great line when he opened the show,”
“He said, ‘Well, folks, I gotta say I am so glad that Fashion Week is over because I am (expletive) exhausted.’ ”
Lange’s book “Too fat to fish” debuted at #1 on the New York Times best seller list in 2008.
