Mo Money, Mo Problems. At least that’s what Diddy’s hip-hop crew once taught us. But is it really that ironic that the multi-million dollar mogul is now atop Forbes highest grossing hip-hop artists?
Upon the release of the figures just yesterday, from the prestigious publication, many were surprised to witness the shift in power, as Shawn Carter, aka Jay-Z, is no longer hip-hop’s leading earner. Although the separation between he and fellow entrepreneur Sean Combs is minimal at best, as they took the number one and two spots, Jay has been owning virtually all markets over the last few years, until now that is.
The two have a somewhat mirrored pattern of earned success, in similarities with clothing lines and affiliations with music labels. At the same time, however, each has his differing avenue of revenue. Hov has recently ventured into film, as well as putting out a top selling book, and dabbles in the culinary arts as well.
Diddy’s most notable achievement worthy of higher income is his beloved and now highly popular Ciroc Vodka. What—you haven’t heard the product uttered in virtually a hundred rap songs yet?
As aforementioned, Diddy and Jay-Z leading the charge for the top five highest hip-hop earners comes as no shock whatsoever. The rest of the group has shifted slightly, as super producer Dr. Dre has experienced quite the comeback year and has been awarded significantly, thus taking the number three slot.
Rapper turned actor, 50 Cent comes in tied at the four and five spot, alongside Young Money bossman, Birdman. All thanks to Lil Wayne and Drake on that one.
All this leaves us with only one reoccurring question—where the ladies at?
