JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –“Twinkie Defense” — A Florida man attempting to steal Twinkies from a local convenience store was shot Thursday afternoon by the clerk following a chase and a struggle, according to Jacksonville police.

Joseph Williams, 18, was taken into custody after walking into a Jacksonville hospital seeking treatment for a gunshot wound to the arm.

Police said Williams was trying to steal the golden snack cakes from Happy Jacks in Northwest Jacksonville just after 4 p.m. Thursday.

During the alleged theft, the clerk displayed a handgun and chased Williams out of the store. Police said the store clerk caught Williams outside the store, and they got into a struggle.

Holding the gun in his right hand, the store clerk said Williams looked at his gun as if to grab it, so the clerk struck Williams in the head with it causing  the gun to accidently fire, striking the Twinkie bandit in the arm.

Police called in the K-9 unit to track Williams’ blood trail after he fled the scene, but were unable to find him.

Around 9 p.m., Williams walked into a local hospital for treatment and admitted to being in a struggle with the store clerk. He was then arrested.

Williams was charged with petty theft and resisting/opposing a retail merchant. It is unclear if Williams is still in custody, or if he has retained the services of a lawyer.

I don’t know what’s worse, getting shot for stealing a Twinkie or shooting a person for trying to steal a Twinkie? Either way, it is a sad state of affairs when a person gets shot for something as entirely stupid as this.
