When it comes to debut singles released in the first part of this year, indubitably, Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” have stirred the most buzz. But who’s going to come out the winner in 2011? Many of you are probably thinking, “well they are both multimillion dollar recording artists… didn’t the both win?” No! This is meretricious Hollywood people. We need a definite loser!
So far, according to the Yahoo’s OMG site, the numbers are as follows:
“ ‘Hold It Against Me’ was officially released on January 10, 2011, a day earlier than originally scheduled. On January 19, 2011, Billboard officially announced that Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ had become her second single to hit the top of the Hot 100 in its first week on the charts. It sold 411,000 downloads.”
…And now for Gaga:
“ ‘Born This Way’ was released on Friday, February 11th to coincide with Gaga’s first performance of the song at the Grammy awards on the 13th. On February 16th, Billboard officially announced Gaga’s debut at number 1. She tallied 448,000 digital sales of ‘Born This Way.’ Gaga beat Britney’s numbers despite having far less time for eager fans to snap up downloads.”
Now let’s face it, Britney Spears is a household name that isn’t being forgotten any time soon… Though that stated, Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” just seemed to overpower and blow away all of the competition. There was such a media craze over the release of the official music video which surfaced Monday, February 28th at 11:00 AM Eastern/8 AM Pacific, it would have been next to impossible to steer fans in a different direction.
