Headed to the Vegas strip this memorial day? Well, you’re certainly not the only one. “CheapOair, [the] leading online travel agency, released leisure travel pricing and destination trends for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday based on customers’ purchase behavior,” which was published by Marketwire.

“The data compares the top ten purchased domestic Memorial Day weekend travel destinations and airfares for 2012 vs. 2011, which have collectively increased by 3% vs. 2011.” Our City of Sin has moved all the way up to first place this year. Here is how the years’ data was broken down. “Top Ten Destinations 2012 vs. 2011: Flights to Las Vegas are the most popular this Memorial Day, pushing the destination up from third place in 2011 and bumping Miami and Denver down from their previous tops positions.” For some reason, the buying trends are mostly sunny west coast bound this holiday. “Other notable changes include Los Angeles and Atlanta moving up in popularity ahead of Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando. San Francisco, Chicago, and Dallas fall into the same ranking positions from 2011.”

Below is CheapOair’s data chart detailing the last two years of top ticket purchases.

This also takes into account that airfare as a whole has risen approximately 3% on average. CheapOair suggests that, “those looking for cheap flights this Memorial Day however, should look toward Las Vegas, Chicago, and Atlanta which are down from 2011. Despite Chicago’s steepest decrease in airfare (-14%), it remains the 9th preferred destination for the holiday weekend so travelers can save money on airfare and enjoy fewer crowds in the windy city this Memorial Day.” It’s interesting that conversely, “despite being the destination with the single largest increase (+5%) in airfare, flights to Los Angeles increased in popularity, pushing the destination up the top 10 list a notch vs. 2011.”

So, with the ups, downs, and sideways… Will the fabulous Nevada lights be on your itinerary?
