England- Naomi Campbell has decided her next attack isn’t going to be on an innocent assistant or some other humble working person. This time she is taking her over inflated self-opinion to Cadbury and Kraft Foods (the parent company) after they had run a new campaign in England for their new chocolate bar “Bliss”. The tagline is, “Move over Naomi – there is a new diva in town.”
Spokespeople for Kraft have assured Naomi as well as the public that this ad was meant to play on Naomi Campbell’s diva-like attitude and not the color of her skin. However, in light of her failing if not already over career she has found a way to put herself back into the spotlight by saying that the ad was purposely designed to insult black women and the black community as a whole.
Would a corporation as big as Kraft Foods be so foolish as to alienate an entire race? On the other hand, would it be more probable that someone who usually dishes out insults simply can’t take it when she is the subject of the jest? Perhaps, but Cambell and her mother are pursuing this matter with all their might and have compared the now pulled ad campaign to racist material from the 1950’s.
Simon Woolley from Operation Black Vote (OBV) has been spending his time writing to civil rights leaders like Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson in order to try to get the Afro-American population in the US aware and involved in this issue. Although, with the current real struggles that plague Afro-American families and individuals in the US, Woolley may find it hard to gain sympathy for someone like Naomi Cambell who usually bases her like or dislike of people on their status and wealth, and has made that very public with her mistreatment of others.
Cadbury has pulled the ad and released a statement explaining the advertisement was nothing more than, “a light-hearted take on the social pretensions of Cadbury Dairy Milk Bliss”. True or not, it is strikingly ironic that someone who puts so much emphasis on the importance of social separatism doesn’t seem to like it when she isn’t doing the victimizing. This sort of complaint is without a doubt about color, and that color is green!Tags: Ad, England, No Bliss for Naomi Campbell, racism
