NEW YORK, N.Y. —-Regis Philbin’s sudden departure from the show he hosted for 28-years appears to be over money. According to TMZ, the execs at ABC told his agent they were going to cut Regis’ salary when his current contract expired.
Sources close to the show told the gossip site that Regis’ salary cut was because the show was not performing as well as in the past and because the 79-year-old host takes a lot of time off.
Regis who reportedly makes between $18 and $20 million a year was angered by the salary news, and that’s what triggered the announcement that he was leaving the show.
Co-host Kelly Ripa who was informed of Regis’ decision 15 minutes before airtime was furious with the long time host, because “she felt it showed a total lack of respect for her .” according to the inside source.
Apparently, Ripa wasn’t the only one pissed at Regis; the entire production team is angry and hurt by his sudden decision to leave. “They felt blindsided” the source revealed.
Since his announcement Tuesday there has been a lot of speculations as to who will take Regis’ seat on the show. So far, ABC has made no announcement.
As for Regis’ agent, Jim Griffin, Reeg fired him. We’re told Regis feels Griffin did not negotiate the upcoming deal effectively.
A source close to Philbin told the Daily Scene that Philbin has already hired a new agent and will make a return to television soon.
